Gone, but not forgotten

Today the temperature was in the high 60s. At some point this afternoon, Jess left me a voicemail. She said, “You’re probably out biking and taking pictures,” and she was exactly right. I had biked to the corner of Mass Ave. and Comm Ave., where I parked my bike before taking a long walk down to the Common and back.

As I was walking back, something didn’t feel quite right. I thought I had parked it closer, and a few blocks later I was pretty convinced that I had already passed the sign post to which I had locked it. I walked back and forth several times to double-check, but it was gone. No sign of the lock or helmet either. I checked a nearby bike store; maybe someone had taken it in after discovering that the bike was improperly locked. Of course they had no idea of what I was talking about.

In the grand scheme of things a stolen bike isn’t a huge deal, but the whole ordeal has left me a bit depressed. The bike was a very nice birthday gift from Jen, and it had been a great companion of late since Jen has been busy with school and the winter has been unseasonably warm. I enjoyed the rides on the Minuteman Trail, along the Esplanade, and most recently through Middlesex Fells, not to mention the short rides to work and Harvard Square. I suppose things could have gone differently had I decided to stay in, biked to a different destination, or not left it alone for so long, but I also suppose that it’s silly to think about that now. In any case, the bike will be missed greatly.

[…] Here are a few of the pictures I snapped at the Public Garden last week while my bike was being stolen. Not a great trade in retrospect, but it was a pleasant afternoon. There were lots of people walking around, and some confused cherry blossoms were in full bloom. […]
